thirteen Chinese fugitives therein referred to had been re-arrested, and were being dealt with in accordance with the Extradition Ordinance of this Colony; the Viceroy of Canton having again applied for their rendition.
After several full and patient hearings in the Public Court, during which the prisoners had the advantage of legal assistance, the Police Magistrate reported as follows to the Colonial Secretary:-
"No. 2 of 1850-entitled 'An Ordinance to provide for the Extradition of Fugitive Offenders'.
"I have the honour to forward depositions taken at this Court in pursuance of an application from an Officer of the Chinese Government under the provisions of Ordinance No. 2 of 1850, whereby thirteen prisoners were charged with murder and cutting and wounding a Chinese subject within the Empire of China.
"I have the honour to inform you that two of the prisoners were discharged on the ground of the ineffective carrying out of the Treaties between Great Britain and China in so far as relates to Chinese subjects within the Colony of Hongkong":"
